Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has stepped into the fiery debate within the MAGA movement over H-1B visas, a program that has divided opinions among influential figures.
Speaking candidly at a recent press conference, DeSantis didn’t hold back in criticizing the H-1B skilled workers visa program. Designed to allow U.S. employers to hire foreign nationals for specialized roles—or even as fashion models with exceptional talent—the program requires applicants to hold at least a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent. But according to DeSantis, the system is far from perfect.

“We’ve got some big problems with some of the legal programs we have,” DeSantis said. “This H-1B program? Americans train the H-1Bs, then they’re fired and replaced. How would that even remotely be acceptable?”
His remarks reflect growing frustration among certain factions of the MAGA movement, where the H-1B program has sparked fierce debate.
The MAGA Divide: For and Against
Not everyone in the movement agrees with DeSantis. Prominent figures like Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy have defended the program, claiming it addresses a critical skills gap in America.
Ramaswamy has argued, “The U.S. does not produce the best engineers,” while Musk doubled down, saying there’s “a permanent shortage of excellent engineering talent” in the country.
On the other side, Trump allies like Laura Loomer and Steve Bannon are staunchly opposed to the program. Loomer accused Musk of retaliating against her support for Trump’s immigration policies by removing her blue checkmark on X (formerly Twitter).
“Looks like Elon Musk is silencing me for supporting Trump’s original immigration policies,” Loomer wrote. “I’ve always been America First and believe promises made should be promises kept.”
Bannon, never one to mince words, labeled Musk a “toddler” and dared him to “bring it” after Musk said he would fight for the program “to my last drop of blood.”
Trump’s Take on H-1B Visas
Amid the turmoil, Donald Trump has shown support for Musk and Ramaswamy’s perspective. Trump recently told the New York Post: “I’ve always liked the visas. I have many H-1B visas on my properties. I’ve been a believer in H-1B. It’s a great program.”
Trump’s endorsement highlights the complexity of the issue, with strong opinions on both sides of the aisle.
