A 17-year-old boy was involved in the accident, and the other driver offered to help him replace a damaged tire. The man convinced the teen to ride along in his car to get a new tire. What seemed like a kind gesture quickly turned unsettling.
After buying the tire, the man didn’t return the boy to the crash site as promised. Instead, he continued driving aimlessly around Grand Junction for several hours. Despite the teen repeatedly asking to be dropped off at his grandparents’ home, the man refused. Finally, after hours of driving, the man brought the boy back to the crash site, where the teen fixed his tire and was able to get home safely without injury.
Later that day, Grand Junction Police Department officers connected this incident to another report about a swerving truck pulling a camper near Interstate 70 and Horizon Drive. When officers tried to stop the truck, the driver refused to pull over, leading to a tense situation. Eventually, the police conducted a successful traffic stop near the intersection of 26 Road and G Road.
The driver, identified as 58-year-old Rex Schiesser, was arrested and taken to the Mesa County Detention Facility. He faces several serious charges, including second-degree kidnapping, reckless endangerment, felony eluding, false imprisonment, DUI, multiple hit-and-run violations, reckless driving, and disregarding a stop sign.
The Grand Junction Police Department has urged families to talk to their loved ones about the importance of staying safe and being cautious around strangers. While this incident ended without physical harm, it highlights the importance of vigilance and awareness.
