Donald Trump, on his very first day as President, appointed Brian Driscoll as the acting director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). This announcement came quickly after Paul Abbate, who was temporarily holding the position, retired just moments before Trump officially took office.
Driscoll has been with the FBI since 2007 and has built an impressive resume. He’s worked in the New York field office, served on the FBI’s SWAT team, and held leadership roles within the agency’s critical tactical units. Most recently, just last week, he was appointed as the special agent in charge of the Newark, New Jersey, field office by outgoing FBI director Christopher Wray.
Abbate’s brief stint as acting director lasted only a day. In an email to his colleagues, he explained why he stayed on a little longer than planned, saying it was to help with a smooth transition for the FBI. He expressed his confidence in the agency’s team and their ability to continue serving and protecting the country.
Driscoll brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Over the years, he has been a key figure in some of the FBI’s most critical operations. Back in 2011, he joined the Hostage Rescue Team, one of the agency’s elite units, and eventually became its team leader. He has also worked closely with law enforcement and military organizations from other countries, strengthening partnerships and coordinating training.
While Driscoll’s time as acting director may be temporary, the position will likely be filled permanently by Kashyap “Kash” Patel, who was nominated by Trump in November. Patel, a lawyer and investigator, has been a vocal advocate for exposing corruption and defending the Constitution. Trump praised Patel as a strong leader who puts America first, crediting him with helping to uncover what Trump called the “Russia hoax.”
For now, all eyes are on Brian Driscoll as he steps into this crucial leadership role at the FBI. His experience and leadership will guide the agency through this period of transition as they continue their mission to protect the American people and uphold the Constitution.
