A dramatic chase came to a halt when a suspect wanted in an Amber Alert was arrested in Edgefield County, South Carolina. The situation began early on Sunday morning, when a statewide Amber Alert was issued for a 9-year-old girl who had been taken during a car theft in Oconee County.
The suspect, 28-year-old Zackery Steven Cosgrove, had allegedly stolen a black 2019 Nissan Rogue with his niece inside. While deputies from the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office and the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) investigated the crime, officers in Edgefield County were on the lookout for Cosgrove.
Around the same time that the Amber Alert went out, Edgefield deputies spotted the stolen vehicle traveling on Highway 25. They quickly gave chase with sirens and lights. After a short pursuit, Cosgrove pulled over at the intersection of Highway 25 and Jake Bryan Road.
The situation was handled carefully, with a felony car stop procedure, and Cosgrove was taken into custody without further incident. Fortunately, the 9-year-old girl was safely recovered and unharmed. The stolen car was also returned.
Cosgrove was then handed over to authorities in Oconee County, where he faced charges of grand larceny and kidnapping. He was denied bond during his first court appearance and will be scheduled for a later hearing.
This tense situation ended with the child safe and the suspect in custody, showing how law enforcement responded quickly to resolve the crisis.
