In a case that has captured attention in Oklahoma, Jim Bob Story, 49, from Cushing, has been sentenced to 60 months in federal prison for illegal possession of a firearm after a felony conviction and for receiving and concealing stolen property. This sentence follows a thorough investigation by several law enforcement agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and local police.
Here’s what happened:
In February 2024, officers from the Sac and Fox Nation Tribal Police were tipped off that a stolen vehicle was being kept on Story’s property. After obtaining a search warrant, they found not only the vehicle but also a rifle, ammunition, and several other items stolen from Cushing, such as a welder and a log splitter.
Story’s criminal history includes multiple felony convictions, like second-degree burglary and drug-related offenses, making this case even more significant.
This case was brought to federal court because Story is a member of the Sac and Fox Nation, and the crimes took place on land held in trust for the tribe.
At the January 2024 sentencing, U.S. District Judge Jodi W. Dishman made it clear that Story’s extensive criminal record played a role in his 5-year prison sentence. She emphasized the importance of sending a strong message to deter future crimes. In addition to the prison time, Story will face three years of supervised release once he completes his sentence.
This case was a collaborative effort between the ATF, the Sac and Fox Nation Tribal Police, and the Cushing Police Department. The prosecution was led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tiffany Edgmon.
