Massachusetts residents are in for a wild weather ride as snow squalls and snow showers threaten to impact Tuesday’s morning commute. The National Weather Service (NWS) warned of “heavy snow squalls” moving through the state, particularly across interior Massachusetts and west of Interstate 495, where conditions could quickly deteriorate.
By 10 a.m., snow squalls were already moving toward Boston, with visibility expected to rapidly drop. The squalls, accompanied by strong wind gusts up to 50 mph, could make travel hazardous. The NWS cautioned that roads may become snow-covered, and the brief bursts of snow could lead to dangerous driving conditions, urging drivers to reduce speed, turn on hazard lights, and pull over if needed.
This swift weather system is tied to a cold front passing through the state, which will also bring gusty winds and slick road conditions. By late Tuesday into early Wednesday, a fast-moving clipper system is expected to bring 2 to 3 inches of snow across the region, with the highest snowfall accumulations likely in western and northern Massachusetts.
The snow will cause travel disruptions, especially for those using untreated roads, which may remain slippery for the Wednesday morning commute. Following that, another round of snow squalls is expected Wednesday afternoon, as a cold front ushers in an arctic airmass, with wind chills potentially reaching near zero by late Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
Motorists are advised to stay alert and prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions as the state braces for more wintry weather.
