In Laurens County, South Carolina, a 50-year-old man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for killing his girlfriend and burying her in a shallow grave. William Cagle admitted to the murder of 49-year-old Terry Chermak, leading to his sentencing without the possibility of parole.
The tragic story unfolded in September 2022, when Chermak’s loved ones reported her missing. She was last seen leaving her job on September 9, 2022. In the days leading up to her disappearance, Chermak had texted her sister, expressing doubts about marrying Cagle. But soon after, her family and friends noticed something strange—the tone of text messages coming from her phone changed, making them suspect someone else was texting on her behalf.
Authorities from the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office began investigating and found that Cagle had purchased suspicious items, including a blue tarp, zip ties, and a shovel, from a local hardware store. These purchases raised red flags, and their fears were confirmed when Chermak’s body was discovered buried on her property. She was wrapped in the tarp and secured with zip ties.
Prosecutors revealed chilling details of the crime. Cagle placed a bag over Chermak’s head, shot her in the back of the head, and then stole her car, cellphone, and debit cards. Investigators found a revolver in Chermak’s home and later recovered her abandoned car near the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Cagle, however, had fled the state. He was eventually captured by U.S. Marshals in Denver, Colorado.
Eighth Circuit Solicitor David Stumbo expressed the ongoing concern about domestic violence in the community, saying such cases continue to trouble the state. However, he emphasized that the legal system will tirelessly pursue justice for victims and their families.
This heartbreaking case serves as a reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help before situations escalate. Chermak’s story underscores the need for awareness, prevention, and support for those facing abuse.
