The community of Stow, Ohio, is mourning the loss of Latoia Philpott, a mother of five, who was tragically killed in a murder-suicide. Friends, family, and neighbors gathered at the Stow Community and Senior Center on Sunday for a candlelight vigil to honor her memory and show support to her grieving loved ones.
Stow Mayor John Pribonic described Philpott as a devoted mother who worked tirelessly to care for her children. Her family discovered her body at her home on Meadowlark Trail in late January. Authorities later confirmed that her boyfriend, Benjamin Asiedu, a Summit County Sheriff’s Deputy, was responsible for her murder before taking his own life.
During the vigil, Philpott’s daughter, Rosa, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community. She shared a personal moment, recalling how she sought reassurance from God, asking for a sign that her mother was at peace. Rosa later noticed a small cross appearing in a photograph, something she had never seen before despite having looked at the image multiple times. Her aunt pointed it out, reinforcing Rosa’s belief that it was a message from her mother.
Rosa also shared heartfelt stories about her mother, remembering her as the life of the party—someone who was loving, funny, and full of energy. She recalled moments where she would break down in tears but could almost hear her mother’s voice teasing her for being too dramatic. The memory brought smiles to those gathered, highlighting the warmth and joy Philpott brought into the lives of those around her.
