A Florida man, Antonio Wilcox Jr., 25, is facing vehicular homicide charges following a deadly three-car crash in Miami Gardens on Saturday, February 8. The crash, which occurred just before 6 p.m. near Northwest 170th Street and 37th Avenue, resulted in the death of a woman and four children.
According to Miami Gardens police, speed and alcohol were contributing factors to the crash. “Speed was a factor, and alcohol was also a factor,” stated Sergeant Emmanuel Jeanty during a press conference. “It’s a very tough night for our community,” he added, reflecting the gravity of the incident.
The collision involved three vehicles: a white Nissan Altima, a black Kia Sorento, and a silver Cadillac Escalade. Nine people in total were injured in the crash and transported to local hospitals. Authorities reported that three individuals were trapped inside one of the vehicles and had to be extricated by emergency responders. Additionally, one child was airlifted to a hospital for treatment.
Jeanty emphasized the urgency of providing medical care during such a significant incident, stating, “When you’re dealing with an incident of this magnitude, time is of the essence, so whatever type of medical services or vehicles that are available at the time, that’s what’s going to play a factor on where they go.”
Wilcox was detained at the scene, and authorities are continuing their investigation into the events leading up to the crash. The incident has deeply affected the community, with local officials and residents expressing their shock and sorrow over the tragic loss of life.
