A judge in Georgia has granted bond for Colin Gray, the father of the alleged shooter involved in the deadly September 2024 shooting at Apalachee High School. Colin Gray is facing multiple charges after authorities alleged that he provided his 14-year-old son, Colt Gray, with access to the AR-style rifle used in the attack.
Colin Gray has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder, 19 counts of second-degree cruelty to children, two counts of involuntary manslaughter, and four counts of reckless conduct. His charges represent some of the most severe ever filed against a parent of a juvenile involved in a school shooting. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
On Tuesday, Judge Nicholas Primm approved Colin’s bond at $500,000. As part of his release conditions, he is prohibited from contacting witnesses involved in the case. Colin had initially filed a petition for bond in early February.
During the bond hearing, the court heard details about Colt Gray’s schooling history. According to testimony, Colt attended six different schools across five years, living in multiple locations, including Hall and Forsyth counties, before becoming a student at Apalachee High School.
Several victims’ families and survivors of the shooting urged the court not to grant Colin Gray’s bond. Shayna Aspinwall, the wife of Richard Aspinwall, one of the victims killed in the shooting, provided a statement in court, saying, “The outcome of Colin Gray’s decision was predictable.”
David Phenix, a teacher who sustained injuries in the attack, submitted a written statement to the court, emphasizing the lasting damage caused by the shooting. “The amount of pain afflicted on the school and the surrounding communities was immeasurable,” he wrote.
Colin’s defense attorneys argued that prosecutors failed to prove he would pose a significant danger if released on bond. They contended that a reasonable bond was appropriate under the circumstances.
Meanwhile, Colt Gray is facing over 50 charges, including felony and malice murder, in connection with the shooting. He has also pleaded not guilty.
