In a heartbreaking conclusion to a devastating case, Michael White has been sentenced to 100 years in federal prison for the murder of Big Stone Gap police officer Michael Chandler, along with multiple drug and firearm charges.
White pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, drug distribution, firearm possession, and other related offenses. His charges included causing death using a firearm, conspiring to distribute over 500 grams of methamphetamine, and possession of stolen firearms.
The tragic incident occurred on November 13, 2021, when Officer Chandler was on patrol and responded to a welfare check around 4 a.m. on Orr Street. Upon arrival, he encountered White in the driveway. In a cruel twist of fate, White shot Chandler during their interaction before fleeing the scene on foot.
A Wise County Sheriff’s Deputy later found Officer Chandler unconscious in a ditch, his patrol car still running nearby. Despite emergency efforts, Chandler succumbed to his injuries later that night.
White was originally indicted on 13 charges by a special grand jury in November 2021. His sentencing marks the end of a long legal battle but does little to heal the wounds left behind by Chandler’s tragic death.
The Big Stone Gap community continues to mourn the loss of Officer Chandler, a dedicated officer who lost his life in the line of duty. His sacrifice serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face every day.
