Here’s a shocking and heartbreaking story out of Princeton, New Jersey. Authorities say 31-year-old Matthew Hertgen has been charged with the murder of his younger brother, Joseph Hertgen, and with animal cruelty for allegedly killing a cat that lived in their apartment.
It all happened late Saturday night, February 22, at the Michelle Mews Apartment complex. Around 11:16 p.m., police got a 911 call about a fire and a dead body in the apartment. When officers arrived, they found Matthew Hertgen — who had made the call — inside the home. They also discovered the body of his 26-year-old brother, Joseph, who had suffered severe injuries, including blunt force trauma and deep cuts. Sadly, Joseph was pronounced dead at the scene.
Prosecutors believe a knife and a golf club were used in the attack, though the official cause of death is still waiting on an autopsy.
Both brothers had a background in soccer and impressive achievements. Joseph played soccer at the University of Michigan from 2016 to 2019, earning academic honors and being a standout player in high school. After college, he pursued a career in asset management. Matthew also played soccer, first at Toms River North High School and later at Wesleyan University in Connecticut.
As this tragic case unfolds, the community is left stunned and heartbroken by the loss and the disturbing circumstances surrounding it.
