A man lost his life after entering a booby-trapped home in South Carolina on Monday evening, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called to a reported shooting in Saint Matthews, South Carolina, where they found 34-year-old Jordan Dove with a gunshot wound. The sheriff’s office confirmed his identity in a statement released on Tuesday.
Dove, who lived in Lugoff, South Carolina, was reportedly checking on a vacant house that belonged to a family member when the shooting happened.
When deputies arrived, they quickly determined that the gunshot had come from inside the house. Upon closer investigation, officials discovered that the home had been rigged with a deadly trap. A shotgun was set up at the back door to fire when someone tried to enter. Officers carefully dismantled the trap to secure the scene.
The home was also found with its front door barricaded shut, and there were no other people inside, police said.
Emergency medical teams rushed Dove to the hospital, but sadly, he did not survive his injuries.
Sheriff Thomas Summers said the trap seemed to be designed to target law enforcement officers. He emphasized the dangers that officers face daily.
“This is yet another example of the risks law enforcement encounters every day,” Summers said in a statement.
Authorities have identified the homeowner as Alfonzo Brown, who is currently serving time in prison in another state. Police confirmed that charges will soon be filed against Brown in connection with the case.
Officials assured the public that this was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat.
