Greenville Utilities Commission (GUC) is alerting customers about a rise in scam calls falsely claiming to represent the utility company. Many residents have reported receiving calls where scammers are spoofing GUC’s official phone number and using recordings from its messaging system to appear legitimate.
The fraudulent callers typically threaten customers with immediate service disconnection unless an urgent payment is made. GUC has clarified that they never demand immediate payments over the phone or use threats to force payments. Customers are urged to be cautious and avoid making any payments to unknown callers.
In addition to the phone scams, GUC has also been informed of a separate scam involving individuals posing as solar panel sales representatives. These scammers falsely claim to be affiliated with Greenville Utilities, misleading customers into believing the utility company is endorsing their products. GUC has stated that it does not sell solar panels or endorse any companies for private solar installations.
To protect themselves, customers should remain vigilant and avoid sharing personal or financial information over the phone. If someone receives a suspicious call claiming to be from GUC, they should immediately hang up and contact the company directly using the official phone number: 252-752-7166.
GUC continues to monitor these scams and advises customers to stay informed. Anyone who suspects they have been targeted by a scam should report the incident to local authorities or the utility company.
