An Arizona man is in serious trouble after allegedly trying to hit a kid on an e-bike with his car. The man, Richard Davidson, 52, is now facing five felony charges for his actions during a chaotic scene in Scottsdale.
The incident happened on December 27 when Davidson was driving through an intersection with his son. Surveillance cameras caught what unfolded next. Davidson is seen getting out of his Toyota RAV4, tossing an e-bike off the road, and then going after a young rider. Things escalated quickly from there.
Scottsdale police got 911 calls about a man attacking kids on e-bikes. Witnesses said Davidson got out of his SUV, hit a kid, and then sped off. When police tracked him down and stopped his car, they started asking questions.
Davidson told officers he was frustrated with how the kids were riding their e-bikes in traffic. He admitted he decided to “take care of it” himself. But what he allegedly did was far from reasonable. According to court records, Davidson used his SUV to swerve toward the kids, trying to hit one of them. He then got out, chased a kid on foot, and caused them to fall off their bike. Police say Davidson even took the child’s phone.
And it didn’t stop there. Davidson allegedly went after a second child, pulling them off a moving e-bike and forcing them to the ground before taking their phone too. The whole ordeal was caught on surveillance footage, which also showed him swerving his car toward one of the kids before driving off.
Witnesses say one of the children was trying to call the police when Davidson snatched their phone. When questioned, Davidson said he took the phones to contact the kids’ parents. He even admitted to police that he’d complained about kids riding e-bikes in the area before, saying this was the “fourth time’s the charm.” Davidson told officers he had moved out of Scottsdale because of this very issue.
Police reported that Davidson showed no regret for his actions. He’s now facing two felony charges of robbery, two felony charges of aggravated assault on a minor, and one charge for leaving the scene of an accident involving injury. Davidson was taken to the Maricopa County Jail, where his bond was set at $35,000.
This disturbing incident has left many in Scottsdale shaken, with people questioning what could drive someone to take matters into their own hands so dangerously. It’s now up to the court to decide what happens next for Davidson.
