In a recent reflection on his administration’s foreign policy, President Joe Biden took a moment to address Russia’s war on Ukraine, proudly highlighting how the US has supported Ukraine in their fight and how Putin’s grand ambitions have been thwarted.
Biden shared his thoughts, pointing out that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine hasn’t gone as planned. In fact, he quipped, “When Putin invaded Ukraine, he thought he could capture Kyiv in just a few days. Well, I was the one who ended up visiting Kyiv— not him!” Biden added with a smile, “It was a long train ride, but I’m the only US president to visit a war zone not controlled by US forces.”
Despite the odds, Biden emphasized how the US stepped in to stop Putin’s advance, saying that in almost three years of war, Russia has failed to achieve its goals. “Putin has failed to subdue Ukraine, break NATO’s unity, and make major territorial gains,” Biden listed confidently.
The president also mentioned two key goals he set at the start of the conflict: rallying global support for Ukraine and preventing a war between nuclear powers. “We’ve done both,” he stated. “Ukraine remains free, and its future looks brighter than ever. We’ve also laid the groundwork for the next administration to ensure Ukraine’s continued success.”
And to top it off, Secretary of State Antony Blinken reassured that the current administration is working hard to give the next president—whether it’s Trump or someone else—the best chance to lead on the world stage.
All in all, Biden’s message was clear: the US has been a steadfast ally to Ukraine, and Putin’s plans have been repeatedly crushed. The future is still bright for Ukraine, and the US will continue to play a pivotal role in ensuring its success.
