In just a few days, President-elect Donald Trump will be taking the oath of office, but this year’s Inauguration Day is shaping up to be freezing—literally! According to CNN, we’re in for some seriously chilly weather on January 20th, with temperatures expected to be in the low 20s. That’s nearly 20 degrees colder than usual!
Expect strong winds between 10 and 20 mph, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph. While it looks like the weather will clear up by Inauguration Day, the cold front will still be hanging around, making it feel like a real winter day.
For a bit of perspective, former President Ronald Reagan had one of the coldest inaugurations on record back in 1985, with temperatures barely scraping 7°F at noon. Barack Obama’s first inauguration in 2009 was a little warmer at 28°F. But this year, the forecast is predicting even colder temperatures than Obama’s, making it one of the coldest inaugurations in 40 years!
So, what’s behind this icy cold snap? It’s all due to a rush of Arctic air coming down from Canada, bringing frigid temps to many states across the country.
It’s definitely going to be a cold day in Washington, but hey, at least the skies should be clear—just don’t forget your winter coat!
