A teenager is in serious condition following a shooting in New Bern on Wednesday night. Authorities responded to the incident after receiving an alert from the city’s ShotSpotter system, which detects gunfire. The New Bern Police Department reported that officers arrived at the scene around 7:30 p.m. in the area of Elm Street and 2nd Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers discovered multiple spent shell casings in the roadway, indicating that several rounds had been fired. Additionally, two separate residences in the vicinity had been struck by gunfire while being occupied. Police have not reported any injuries to the residents of these homes but are continuing to assess the extent of the damage.
Shortly after the incident, staff at CarolinaEast Medical Center notified law enforcement that a gunshot victim had arrived at the emergency room. The victim was identified as 19-year-old Sonarrious Morris. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville, where he remains in serious condition.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation, and authorities have not released any information regarding potential suspects or motives. Law enforcement officials are actively seeking leads and reviewing evidence collected from the scene.
