Chaos in Newark Officer Killed, Teen Suspect Dead in Shocking Shootout

A tragic shooting rocked Newark, New Jersey, on Friday evening, leaving a police officer dead, another critically injured, and a teenage suspect killed. The incident happened around 6:20 p.m. near Broadway and Carteret Street in the city’s North Ward, after police responded to reports of gunfire picked up by the ShotSpotter system.

When officers arrived at the scene, they were met with a barrage of bullets. In the chaos, one officer was fatally shot in the head and later died at University Hospital. Another officer was badly wounded but is expected to pull through, according to prosecutors.

A 14-year-old suspect was killed in the exchange of gunfire after reportedly firing nearly 29 rounds. A second suspect has been arrested, though investigators are still trying to figure out exactly what role they played in the violence.
