As we step into a new year, with Donald Trump poised to begin his second term as President, Chief Justice John Roberts has issued a heartfelt message to the nation. He’s urging everyone—from leaders in Washington to everyday citizens—to stand firm in protecting the independence of the judicial system and the rule of law.

Roberts didn’t hold back. He called out the growing trend of dismissing federal court rulings—a behavior he described as “dangerous” and one that must be rejected. “Every administration faces setbacks in court,” he noted. “Yet, for decades, the nation has respected court decisions, avoiding the bitter confrontations of the past.”

His words come at a time of heightened political tension, with partisan attacks and public dissatisfaction clouding the Supreme Court’s image. The Chief Justice expressed concern about the rising threats against judges, including protests outside their homes, acts of intimidation, and even violence. Over 1,000 serious threats have been investigated in recent years, leading to more than 50 arrests.

While Roberts welcomed constructive criticism of the courts, he warned against actions that go too far—like spreading disinformation or inciting defiance against court rulings. These behaviors, he said, could harm the very foundation of democracy.

He reminded public officials to think carefully about their words, as reckless statements can stir dangerous reactions. In Roberts’ eyes, protecting the judiciary isn’t just about safeguarding judges—it’s about defending democracy itself.

His message is clear: respect, civility, and the rule of law must prevail.
