A Christmas Eve outing turned into a terrifying night for a young girl and her mother in Houston. Just before midnight, a 12-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital after being hit by a stray bullet, believed to be from celebratory gunfire. The incident happened while she was walking with her mother outside an apartment complex.
It all began when the mother and daughter were outside their apartment on Westpark Drive near Hillcroft Avenue. Out of nowhere, a bullet struck the young girl in the leg. The shot was likely fired as part of Christmas celebrations, police suspect. While her mother tried to stop the bleeding, a kind-hearted neighbor noticed them and quickly offered to drive them to the hospital.
But as if one tragedy wasn’t enough, another followed. While on their way to the hospital, their car collided with another vehicle. The roads were slick from heavy rain earlier in the evening, which likely contributed to the crash.
Emergency crews from the Houston Fire Department arrived at the scene of the accident and immediately took the injured girl to the hospital. Thankfully, her injuries were not life-threatening, and she is expected to recover.
Houston Police Department Sergeant Ali had an important message for everyone celebrating the holidays: “We just want everyone to be safe. It’s great to have fun and enjoy the festivities, but let’s make sure we’re doing it responsibly.”
As of now, the police have not identified who fired the bullet that injured the girl. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging everyone to celebrate safely and avoid activities that could put others at risk.
