Coast-to-Coast Storm Wraps Up After Soaking U.S.—But One Major Weather Concern Remains

A massive storm that started in Southern California last weekend has now made its way across the country, bringing rain, snow, and even thunderstorms along its path. As it wraps up its journey, the system is delivering wet and wintry weather across parts of the Midwest, mid-Atlantic, and Northeast, while strong thunderstorms rumble through the northern Gulf Coast.

Since temperatures aren’t quite cold enough, snow and ice are mainly sticking to the Northeast. A Winter Weather Advisory was in place for areas of New York, Vermont, and Massachusetts, but any frozen precipitation should taper off by mid-morning Saturday as the storm moves out into the Atlantic.

One thing that’s been especially noticeable this month is the lack of rain. January has been unusually dry for many areas, with some cities—like New York, Philadelphia, Scranton, and Washington, D.C.—experiencing one of their driest starts to the year on record. In fact, for some places, this January ranks in the top 10 driest ever recorded.

With the storm finally moving on, the weekend is expected to bring calmer weather, though the dry spell remains a concern in several regions.
