In Madison, Indiana, a tragic incident unfolded early on December 26 when two men were shot and killed during what the homeowner claims was a burglary. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 3:48 a.m. from a resident on North Bulldog Drive who reported shooting two individuals breaking into his home.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered the bodies of two men, identified as Dalton Keith Skirvin, 27, and Kaleb Adam Skirvin, 29, both from Madison. Investigators revealed that Dalton had faced multiple theft and burglary charges in 2017 and 2018.
The neighborhood where the shooting occurred is described as close-knit by those who live there. Heather, a longtime resident of North Bulldog Drive for nearly 20 years, expressed her surprise, calling the area a friendly place where everyone knows each other. She described her neighbor, the homeowner involved in the shooting, as a kind person. “Friendly guy, never had any issues with him,” Heather shared. “Sweet neighbor.”
While Heather was willing to speak, other neighbors preferred not to go on record. However, some mentioned that the area has experienced a string of break-ins recently, including one at the same house just days before the shooting. Heather noted that homes on one end of North Bulldog Drive seemed to be targeted more frequently.
The sheriff, Benjamin Flint, reassured the community, saying there’s no ongoing threat to public safety. As the investigation continues, it remains unclear if the homeowner will face any charges. Indiana law allows residents to use deadly force to protect their homes under specific circumstances. According to state law, individuals have the right to defend their property if they reasonably believe it’s necessary to stop an unlawful entry or attack.
The case has raised questions about home safety and self-defense laws, but for now, the focus is on understanding the details of what led to this tragic event.
