Desperate for Snow: Winter Storm Finally Brings Relief to Drought-Stricken Arizona

Northern Arizona is finally seeing some snowfall after an unusually dry and warm winter. A winter storm has rolled into the high country, bringing much-needed snow to areas that have been desperate for precipitation.

Flagstaff, which usually gets over three feet of snow by this time of year, has barely seen three inches so far. That’s a record-breaking dry spell, and meteorologists say this storm is a welcome relief.

Megan Taylor, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, explained that while the city is expecting only two to three inches of snow, some areas will get a much bigger dose. Williams, a small town northwest of Flagstaff, could see up to eight inches in the next day. Prescott has also gotten some snow.

The dry winter hasn’t just been unusual—it’s also raised fire concerns. Just last week, the U.S. Forest Service classified the fire danger as high, and over the weekend, a red flag warning was issued, something almost unheard of in the middle of winter. The good news? This snowfall will help reduce the risk.

Taylor pointed out that snow has a lasting impact on the ground, as it melts slowly and keeps moisture in the soil for days or even weeks. While this storm won’t completely make up for the lack of snow so far, every bit helps.

Even though this snowfall is a step in the right direction, Arizona still has a long way to go before winter catches up to normal levels.
