Esteemed Heartland Historian and Retired SEMO Professor Passes Away

Dr. Frank Nickell, a respected historian and retired professor from Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO), passed away on Sunday morning, February 9, as announced by the Kellerman Foundation. Nickell had been actively involved with the foundation since 2014 and had recently attended board meetings in the newly established conference room inside Cape Girardeau’s old City Hall building.

Nickell dedicated over four decades of his life to teaching history at SEMO before retiring in 2013. His contributions to historical education and research left a lasting impact on the university and the community. Many of his colleagues and former students remember him as a dedicated mentor who was passionate about sharing his knowledge.

Longtime friend Tom Neumeyer spoke about Nickell’s influence, expressing gratitude for having known him. Neumeyer highlighted the strong bonds Nickell built throughout his career and how he served as a mentor to many individuals.
