Washington, D.C. – In a shocking turn of events, former FBI Special Agent Johnathan Buma was arrested Monday at John F. Kennedy International Airport while attempting to board an international flight. The arrest follows allegations that he unlawfully disclosed confidential information, violating 18 U.S. Code Section 1905, according to court records filed Tuesday.
Buma, a counterintelligence and counterproliferation specialist, had previously made headlines by claiming that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was potentially “compromised” by Russian intelligence operatives. He also submitted whistleblower statements to Congress, raising concerns about Russian influence operations within U.S. intelligence.
According to court filings, Buma allegedly printed 130 internal FBI files and additional classified documents in October 2023 before notifying superiors of his intent to take unpaid leave. Shortly after, he posted excerpts from a draft of his book online, which reportedly contained sensitive information related to foreign weapons of mass destruction programs.
Further investigations revealed that Buma had shared classified material with associates negotiating a book deal and that confidential information appeared in a U.S. media article. A search of his residence uncovered additional FBI-related documents.
The FBI and the Department of Justice declined to comment on the case.
