A Border Patrol agent tragically lost their life in a shooting on Monday afternoon near the U.S.-Canada border in Vermont. The incident, which also left another person injured and a “subject” dead, is under investigation by federal authorities, including the FBI.
The shooting happened around 3:15 p.m. on Interstate 91 in Coventry, Vermont, a quiet northern town close to the border. While details surrounding the event remain unclear, Vermont State Police confirmed the timeline, and the FBI later shared that a third person involved was taken into custody.
A Hero in Green
The agent, whose identity hasn’t been made public yet, was a member of the U.S. Border Patrol’s Swanton Sector. Acting Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman expressed his sorrow, saying:
“Every day, our Border Patrol agents put themselves in harm’s way so that Americans and our homeland are safe and secure. My prayers and deepest condolences are with our Department, the Agent’s family, loved ones, and colleagues.”
The National Border Patrol Council, the union representing Border Patrol agents, shared its condolences on social media, calling the fallen agent a “brother in green.”
Roads Closed, Investigation Ongoing
Interstate 91 was shut down in both directions following the incident, with only the northbound lane reopening later that night. Authorities have warned that the southbound lane may remain closed for an extended period.
This heartbreaking event has left the community in shock and mourning. Homeland Security has promised a thorough and swift investigation to uncover the details behind this tragic loss.
Let us take a moment to honor the bravery and sacrifice of the Border Patrol agents who risk their lives every day to protect our borders. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the fallen agent’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
