Fierce Winds Force B.C. Ferries to Cancel Evening Sailings — Here’s What You Need to Know

High winds sweeping through the Strait of Georgia have caused B.C. Ferries to cancel several Monday night sailings. If you were planning an evening trip, you’ll want to check your schedule. The 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. sailings from both Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay are called off, leaving the last departure from both terminals at 5 p.m.

B.C. Ferries says anyone with a booking on one of the canceled trips will be contacted by customer service. They’ll either help you find another sailing or provide a full refund if your booking has to be canceled.

It’s not just those routes affected—four sailings between Duke Point (Nanaimo) and Tsawwassen are also scrapped. That means the last ferry from those terminals leaves at 5:45 p.m. The canceled trips include the 8:15 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. departures from both Duke Point and Tsawwassen.

The wild weather comes as Environment Canada issues wind warnings for parts of Vancouver Island and Metro Vancouver. Southeastern winds gusting up to 100 km/h are expected on the west coast of the Island and should start calming down early Tuesday.

In Greater Victoria, the Southern Gulf Islands, eastern Vancouver Island, and Metro Vancouver—including Richmond and Delta—wind gusts could reach 90 km/h overnight. These powerful gusts may lead to building damage, fallen trees, and potential power outages before easing up on Tuesday.

So if you’re in the area, stay safe, secure any loose outdoor items, and keep an eye on weather updates. Better safe than sorry!
