Police in Memphis, Tennessee, responded to a home in the Frayser neighborhood early Monday morning after receiving a report of an accidental injury. The Memphis Police Department stated that a man was grazed by a bullet after his dog unintentionally discharged a firearm.
According to authorities, the incident occurred around 3:50 a.m. when the man was lying on his bed with a female friend. His pit bull puppy, named Oreo, jumped onto the bed, and during the movement, the dog’s paw became stuck inside the gun’s trigger guard. The pressure from the dog’s paw caused the firearm to discharge.
The bullet grazed the man’s upper left thigh, resulting in a non-life-threatening injury. Emergency responders transported him to the hospital, where he was treated and later confirmed to be in stable condition. His family assured that both he and Oreo were doing well following the incident.
Following the gunshot, the man’s female companion left the house, taking the firearm with her. When officers arrived, they discovered shell casings on the floor of the front room. It remains unclear whether police recovered the weapon or if any charges will be filed in connection with the incident.
The Memphis Police Department has used this case to remind gun owners about the importance of firearm safety. Officials encourage individuals to store guns securely, preferably with gun locks, to prevent accidents and unauthorized access.
