Gov. Landry Makes Urgent Appeal to Congress for Infrastructure Investment

Governor Jeff Landry of Louisiana has called on Congress to boost federal investment in the state’s infrastructure, highlighting the need for improved transportation systems to support both local residents and national commerce. Landry’s request was made during a testimony before the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure on January 15, 2025.

The Governor emphasized the importance of efficient, reliable infrastructure to ensure smooth movement of people and goods. He specifically advocated for funding to complete the construction of Interstate 49 through Lafayette and to develop a new Calcasieu River Bridge in Lake Charles. The bridge project, estimated at several billion dollars, will include tolls once completed. Landry expressed concern about the toll rates, particularly for commercial traffic, and asked Congress for additional funding to reduce the financial burden on freight carriers.

In his address, Landry provided context by citing Louisiana’s vital role in national logistics, stating that in 2022, the state handled more than half a trillion dollars in freight. The Governor highlighted how congestion in Louisiana’s transportation network—especially along key interstates due to the flow of goods from ports—poses significant challenges. He called for federal assistance in alleviating this congestion, which not only affects local businesses but also impacts economic growth across the U.S.

Landry also urged Congress to consider reforms aimed at streamlining infrastructure project processes. He proposed eliminating regulatory barriers, improving permitting procedures, and advocating for the “one federal decision” policy. This policy would create a more efficient system for environmental reviews by consolidating them under a single agency, reducing the review process to two years. The Governor argued that such reforms would help accelerate the completion of critical infrastructure projects and better serve the nation’s economic needs.

By securing federal investment and legislative reforms, Landry believes Louisiana can enhance its infrastructure, reduce traffic congestion, and support the state’s and nation’s economic growth.
