Deputies in Halifax County arrested two men following a traffic stop on Saturday. According to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy J. Velez conducted the stop around 11:00 a.m. on East Alsop Street near Highway 301 due to a motor vehicle violation.
During the stop, Deputy Velez identified the passengers as 29-year-old Jarnez Hill and his cousin, 29-year-old Tony Hill Jr., both from Enfield. While speaking with Jarnez Hill, the deputy asked if there were any weapons or drugs in the vehicle. Jarnez admitted that both firearms and drugs were present inside.
Upon searching the vehicle, Deputy Velez discovered a pistol under the front passenger seat. Another firearm, along with several grams of marijuana, was found near the gear shift. A background check revealed that Tony Hill Jr. is a convicted felon and is legally prohibited from possessing a firearm.
Further checks showed that Jarnez Hill had an outstanding order for arrest related to an assault on a female charge. Both men were taken into custody following the search.
Tony Hill Jr. was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and carrying a concealed gun. He was given a secured bond of $9,500 and is scheduled to appear in court on March 27.
Jarnez Hill was charged with possession of marijuana up to one-half ounce, carrying a concealed gun, and was also served with the outstanding order for arrest. For the new charges from the traffic stop, he was held without bond, while a $4,000 bond was set for his previous order for arrest. His court date is set for March 12.
Corporal A. Wood assisted in the traffic stop, and authorities continue to stress the importance of vigilance in keeping illegal firearms and drugs off the streets.
