Heartbreaking Act: Newborn Abandoned on Bronx Doorstep Sparks Outrage

A shocking incident unfolded in the Bronx early Sunday morning when a newborn baby girl was left abandoned on a doorstep in the Longwood neighborhood. The woman accused of leaving the infant, 26-year-old Delfina Galvez, now faces serious charges, including reckless endangerment, child abandonment, and endangering the welfare of a child.

The incident was caught on surveillance footage, showing Galvez walking down Rev. James A. Polite Avenue carrying a green tote bag. Inside the bag was the baby, wrapped in sheets for warmth. Around 6:05 a.m., Galvez left the baby outside a home located at 1102 Rev. James A. Polite Avenue.

A short while later, residents of the building made the heart-wrenching discovery and immediately called the police. The newborn was rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where she is now under the care of medical staff and reported to be in stable condition.

One resident of the building, Fatou Sarr, described her reaction to the shocking scene. She shared how she stepped outside for a walk that morning, only to find police at her door. “I was scared. I’ve never experienced anything like this in my life,” she said. Sarr added that she didn’t see the baby herself and couldn’t understand why someone would choose her building to leave the child.

This heartbreaking incident highlights New York State’s Abandoned Infant Protection Act, which allows parents to safely surrender newborns up to 30 days old at designated locations like hospitals, police stations, or firehouses—no questions asked and no legal consequences. Sadly, Galvez, who lives just a few blocks away at 1038 Rev. James A. Polite Avenue, didn’t use these safe options, putting the baby’s life at risk.

Galvez’s arrest came after a public search launched by the police, who had released the surveillance footage to help locate her.
