A North Carolina community is grieving the tragic loss of three mules that played a significant role in disaster relief efforts following Hurricane Helene. The mules, named Vader, Amigo, and Kev, were part of the Toberer family’s Mountain Mule Packer Ranch and were crucial in delivering supplies to areas in western North Carolina that were devastated by the storm.
On early Sunday morning, Mike and Michelle Toberer received a heartbreaking call informing them that their mules had been struck and killed by a car. The incident occurred after a tree damaged the ranch’s fence, allowing the animals to wander away from their pasture and onto the road, where they were fatally hit.
The loss of these mules is particularly devastating, as they were essential to relief efforts in the months following Hurricane Helene. Due to the rugged terrain and destruction caused by the storm, vehicles and heavy equipment were often unable to access affected communities. The Toberers’ mule team became a lifeline, transporting much-needed supplies to isolated residents who had no other means of receiving aid.
For the Toberer family, the mules were far more than just working animals—they were symbols of resilience and hope for those impacted by the disaster. Michele Toberer emphasized the deep emotional and practical significance of their contribution, stating, “The mules themselves brought a lot of hope to the people that I think even today feel forgotten. The amount of work that they’ve done for the relief effort has been incredible. So, it just feels like there’s a loss on so many layers.”
Despite this tragedy, the Toberers remain committed to their mission. Through their nonprofit organization, Mission Mules, they plan to continue their relief and outreach efforts, ensuring that their work of supporting communities in need does not come to an end. The loss of Vader, Amigo, and Kev is deeply felt by the family and the many individuals who benefited from their efforts, but their legacy of service and dedication will live on.
