Congressman Don Davis Introduces Honor and Remember Flag Recognition Act
Ayden, N.C. – Congressman Don Davis has introduced H.R. 1363, the Honor and Remember Flag Recognition Act, to officially designate the Honor and Remember Flag as a national symbol of commitment to honoring fallen servicemembers. This legislation follows the example of over 28 states that have already adopted the flag to commemorate military personnel who lost their lives in service.
Davis, an Air Force veteran, emphasized the significance of recognizing those who made the ultimate sacrifice. “As an Air Force veteran, it’s essential that we recognize all those on the frontlines fighting for our country, especially those killed in the line of duty,” Davis stated. “This bill is a way to honor them, acknowledge their bravery, and give them the recognition they deserve.”
The congressman announced the bill at the home of Kathy Moore, a Gold Star mother and Director of the North Carolina chapter of Honor and Remember, Inc. Moore’s son, Army Cpl. Ryan D. Russell, was a medic who lost his life while serving in Iraq on March 5, 2007. She reflected on her son’s journey, recalling his determination. “He was a go-getter, a ladies’ man,” she shared with a smile. “We were surprised when he chose to become a medic because he couldn’t stand the sight of blood as a kid. But he was determined, and he did it.”
Moore has been an advocate for national recognition of the Honor and Remember Flag for years, aiming to ensure that all Americans understand its meaning. “This flag represents the sacrifice of our servicemen and women,” she said. “It’s important that families and the public recognize its significance.”
When asked about recent FAA employee terminations following a deadly plane crash involving three servicemembers, Davis remained focused on the legislation. “We’re here to honor those who served and sacrificed,” he said. “We want to recognize them, thank them, and support their families.”
Davis noted that now that the bill has been introduced, the next steps include pushing it through committee hearings, rules discussions, and securing a vote on the House floor.
As a state legislator, Davis previously helped North Carolina recognize the Honor and Remember Flag as an official remembrance flag in 2010.
