James Carville Calls on Democrats to Highlight Trump’s Biggest Broken Promise

James Carville, a seasoned Democratic strategist, believes that President Donald Trump’s failure to lower grocery prices—especially eggs—could be the key to Democrats regaining voter trust as the 2026 midterm elections approach.

In a recent chat on News Nation with Chris Cuomo, Carville pointed out that Trump made a bold promise during his campaign: he’d tackle high grocery prices, including the soaring cost of eggs. But now, Carville argues, Trump hasn’t kept that promise—and it could be a huge opportunity for Democrats.

“Remember, Trump’s No. 1 promise was to lower grocery prices, especially eggs,” Carville said. “Before he even took office, he claimed, ‘I can’t do anything about it.’ Well, thanks for letting us know, right?”

Carville’s message is clear: while issues like immigration may have worked for Trump in past elections, not delivering on grocery prices—something that affects every American—could be his downfall. And, to Carville, it’s about more than just the economy. It’s about trust.

Democrats, on the other hand, are already jumping into action. Carville noted how Sen. Elizabeth Warren and 20 other lawmakers recently called out Trump for focusing on issues like deportations and pardoning January 6th attackers, instead of tackling what really matters to voters—prices at the grocery store.

While Carville acknowledges that factors like bird flu have certainly played a role in rising egg prices, he made an important point: “That’s not what Trump promised during the election,” he said. “His No. 1 thing was lowering grocery prices, and he’s done nothing but let them keep rising.”

For Democrats, it’s about sticking to the basics. Carville stressed that, in the face of all the distractions, Democrats should stay focused on delivering real solutions to everyday problems—like rising food costs. He even suggested that the way forward could involve giving people tools to manage inflation and grocery bills.

As Carville said, “If we focus on these fundamental things, voters will notice—and they’ll reward us.”
