Justice for Victims: Canadian Man Sentenced for Sextortion of Contra Costa County Teen

In a recent case that sheds light on the dangers of online exploitation, a 25-year-old man from Canada, Nicholas Fahey, has been sentenced to two years in prison for sexually extorting a minor in Contra Costa County, California.

The story begins in 2019, when Fahey reached out to the victim through a social media app. What started as seemingly harmless online interaction quickly took a dark turn when Fahey asked for sexually explicit images. After the victim complied, the situation became even more sinister. Fahey began threatening to release the photos unless the victim sent more.

Luckily, the case was handed over to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and Homeland Security Investigations. With their help, Fahey was identified as the suspect and arrested in Bay Bulls, a small town in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

On May 21, 2021, Fahey faced charges in Canada’s superior court, and after a lengthy legal process, he was sentenced earlier this week. In addition to serving time behind bars, Fahey must also register as a sex offender for the next 10 years. He will also face three years of supervised release after completing his sentence.

This disturbing case is part of a much larger problem. Prosecutors emphasized that “sextortion”—a form of sexual extortion where perpetrators manipulate minors into sharing explicit content—has become one of the most common crimes targeting children online. Shockingly, between 2021 and 2023, 12,600 children in the U.S. were victims of this crime, with at least 20 suicides linked to the abuse, according to the FBI.

District Attorney Diana Becton shared an important message for parents: “Individuals who prey on minors online aren’t limited by borders. These predators can be anywhere, and we must stay vigilant.”

She also made it clear that her office will continue to work alongside law enforcement agencies like the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to bring justice to victims, no matter where the criminals are located.

If you’re a parent or guardian, it’s a wake-up call to stay informed about the dangers your kids could face online—and to take steps to protect them. It’s never too early to have those important conversations about internet safety.

Let’s all work together to make the internet a safer place for everyone.
