In a significant ruling, 23-year-old Geordell Devon Arthur from Wapato, Washington, was sentenced to 12 months in federal prison for unlawful sexual contact with a 13-year-old girl. The sentencing, handed down by U.S. District Judge Mary K. Dimke on January 24, 2025, also includes five years of supervised release, and Arthur will be required to register as a sex offender.
At the time of the crime, Arthur, who was 19, made inappropriate contact with the victim at a location on the Yakama Nation Indian Reservation in May 2021. The young girl bravely shared her story with investigators, revealing that Arthur’s friends threatened her to keep quiet and avoid involving law enforcement.
“This is a difficult case, and the pain victims face in situations like these is immense,” said U.S. Attorney Vanessa Waldref. “It takes real bravery for victims to come forward, especially when they are pressured or threatened. My office remains committed to protecting our community’s most vulnerable, particularly our children.”
FBI Special Agent in Charge, W. Mike Herrington, also spoke out, commending the victim for her courage. “Despite the threats, she stood strong, and her abuser will now face the consequences,” he said. “This case highlights the importance of investigators and the law working together to ensure justice is served for those who need it the most.”
The case was investigated by the FBI and Yakama Nation Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Murphy leading the prosecution. This sentence serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight against abuse, ensuring that those who harm others are held accountable for their actions.
