Landlord Convicted of Hate Crime After Stabbing 6-Year-Old Boy in Shocking Attack

A heartbreaking and horrifying crime has shaken a small Illinois community. In October 2023, just days after the Hamas attack in Israel, a 6-year-old Palestinian American boy named Wadea Al-Fayoume was brutally murdered by his own landlord, 73-year-old Joseph Czuba. The tragedy has now ended in a conviction, with Czuba found guilty of murder and a hate crime.

The attack happened in the family’s home in Plainfield, Illinois. Czuba not only stabbed Wadea’s mother, Hanan Shaheen, but also turned his rage on the little boy. Hanan testified that as she tried to call 911 from the bathroom, she heard her son scream, “Oh no, stop!” before Czuba stabbed him 26 times. The knife was still lodged in Wadea’s body when police arrived.

Prosecutors described the scene as unimaginably brutal. During the trial, they played a recording of Czuba referring to Wadea and his mother as “infested rats.” Hanan also told the court that Czuba had threatened them after the Oct. 7 attack, saying, “You, as a Muslim, must die.”

Czuba pleaded not guilty, and his defense team argued that the investigation was incomplete. They pointed out that his ex-wife, who testified against him, could only recall one violent outburst in their 30-year marriage. But the jury didn’t buy it. Czuba was convicted of murder, attempted murder, and a hate crime. His sentencing date hasn’t been set yet.
