In a surprising turn of events, 43-year-old Troy Larson from Larimore, North Dakota, has been declared Not Criminally Responsible after facing serious charges, including murder, attempted murder, and reckless endangerment. Initially, Larson pleaded not guilty to the nine felony charges against him. But with a hearing scheduled for January 24th, the case is far from over.
Here’s a breakdown of what happened:
On the afternoon of March 23, 2024, deputies were called to a shooting at a home on 502 West 8th St. in Larimore. Sheriff Andy Schneider says that when they arrived, they quickly learned that Larson had fired shots at a man and woman inside the home. Sadly, the 64-year-old Jamey Holweger was found dead at the scene.
The woman inside managed to escape and called 911, while law enforcement set up a perimeter around the house. Despite repeated requests for Larson to surrender peacefully, he refused to cooperate. The situation escalated, and the SWAT team was called in.
As the team approached the house, Larson fired several rounds at their vehicle, shattering the windshield. After a tense standoff, Larson finally emerged from the house—wearing only a bathrobe. Deputies ordered him to raise his hands, but Larson ignored their commands and reached into his pocket. That’s when Sergeant Ryan Wadlow took action, firing a shot from his AR-15 rifle, striking Larson in the back. Another deputy also fired a 40mm round at Larson, hitting him in the same spot.
After he was taken into custody, Larson was treated by paramedics at the scene and rushed to Altru Hospital. He made his first court appearance from his hospital bed, where his bond was set at a staggering $1 million.
As the legal process continues, the case of Troy Larson remains a topic of great interest and concern in the Larimore community. Stay tuned for more updates.
