As 2024 draws to a close, President-elect Donald Trump’s supporters are catching some serious heat from liberal commentators. Figures like Rick Wilson, a founder of the Lincoln Project, have been outspoken about the “hyperpopulist” side of Trump’s base, especially those who aren’t college-educated. During an MSNBC appearance, Wilson mocked this group, suggesting they think immigration and visas are all about “brown people.”
Wilson’s comments were sparked by a debate among Republicans about the H1-B visa program, which Trump himself has used for his properties. He went on to joke about Trump’s supporters, painting them as everyday people with a “GED” and “fake Oakley sunglasses”—and claiming they think they could have been top software designers if it weren’t for immigration and diversity programs.
Other commentators piled on. Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin had a laugh about “MAGA readers,” arguing that Trump supporters would never pick up a subscription to her paper. Meanwhile, CNN’s Don Lemon didn’t hold back, calling them “dumb f—ing idiots” and mocking them as part of a cult.
Even MSNBC’s Eddie Claude Jr. and Nicolle Wallace chimed in, suggesting that Trump’s movement thrives on “greed and hatred,” with elements of xenophobia and selfishness. President Biden also joined the chorus, calling Trump supporters “garbage” during a campaign call. While the White House tried to walk back the comment, the message was clear: there’s a lot of frustration with Trump’s base.
These heated remarks show just how divided the nation is as we head into 2025.
