When actor Mel Gibson appeared on Fox News’ Hannity show last Friday, he made a statement that left many viewers scratching their heads. The Hollywood star was there to applaud President Donald Trump’s visit to California in the wake of the devastating wildfires, but it was his colorful choice of words that stole the spotlight.
“I’m glad Trump’s here at the moment,” Gibson told Sean Hannity. “It’s like daddy arrived and he’s taking his belt off, you know?”
He continued, “I think he’ll get some results here quickly.”
Gibson, who lost his Malibu home to the wildfires, expressed empathy for others facing similar heartbreak. “My heart goes out to all the other residents. You meet people all the time who’ve lost their homes,” he said. “We talk, commiserate, and encourage each other to stay strong. Everyone’s putting on a brave face. They’re a good bunch out here.”
Trump’s visit came with its own share of controversy. While meeting with California Governor Gavin Newsom, the president reiterated his threats to withhold disaster relief unless the state adopts policy changes.
Gibson’s Hollywood Role Under Trump’s Watch
Gibson’s appearance on Hannity wasn’t the first time his name has been linked to the former president. Just days earlier, Trump announced on Truth Social that he had appointed Gibson, along with fellow actors Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone, as “Special Ambassadors” to the “great but very troubled” Hollywood.
In his post, Trump stated that the trio would serve as his “eyes and ears” in the entertainment industry, vowing, “I will get done what they suggest.” He added, “It will again be, like The United States of America itself, The Golden Age of Hollywood.”
The announcement came as a surprise to Gibson, who reportedly found out about his new role through the same Truth Social post as the public. “I was just as surprised as anyone,” Gibson told Variety. “Nevertheless, I heed the call. My duty as a citizen is to give any help and insight I can.”
A Longtime Trump Supporter
This isn’t Gibson’s first public show of support for Trump. Back in 2021, he made headlines when he appeared to salute the president at a UFC fight. Last October, he raised eyebrows again by taking a swipe at Trump’s former opponent, Kamala Harris, claiming she had “the IQ of a fence post.”
Whether you agree with Gibson’s opinions or not, his fiery remarks and unexpected Hollywood ambassadorship certainly keep him in the spotlight. What’s next for Gibson in this new role? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure—he’s never one to shy away from making waves.
