Early Tuesday morning, two Memphis police officers were injured while working at the scene of a crash on Interstate 240 near Poplar Avenue in East Memphis. It all started just before 1 a.m. when officers responded to a hit-and-run accident in the area.
As the officers were investigating the situation, a Chevrolet Tahoe came barreling into the scene. The SUV hit a parked police car, which then struck the two officers standing nearby. Thankfully, their injuries weren’t life-threatening, and they were quickly taken to the hospital for treatment.
The driver of the Tahoe was also taken into custody at the scene and transported to Regional One Health. Officials reported that his condition was stable, and his injuries were not critical. Meanwhile, a fourth person, a man involved in the original hit-and-run crash, was also hurt. He, too, is expected to recover.
As of now, no charges have been filed against anyone involved in the incident. Police are continuing their investigation to figure out exactly what happened.
This stretch of I-240 near Poplar Avenue has been the site of several accidents in the past, and Tuesday’s incident is another reminder of how dangerous the roads can be, especially late at night. Stay cautious out there, folks, and remember to always give emergency responders plenty of space to do their jobs safely.
