Federal experts, in collaboration with the Meridian Rapid Defense Group, are working on a plan to enhance safety and security in New Orleans, particularly in Jackson Square and Frenchmen Street. This initiative comes in response to concerns about vehicular attacks in these high-profile areas. The city’s Homeland Security director, Collin Arnold, confirmed that the specialists and Meridian Rapid Defense Group are developing “vehicle mitigation safety” strategies to address these concerns. The request for these plans was made by Arnold and the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) in light of rising security threats.
While Arnold did not specify a timeline for when new barriers would be installed, the plans are expected to play a significant role in securing these popular locales. The move comes in the wake of the terror attack on New Year’s Day, heightening awareness of the vulnerability of public spaces to potential vehicle-driven threats. This effort also coincides with the lead-up to Super Bowl LIX, which will take place on February 9, 2025, further increasing the need for heightened security measures throughout the city.
New Orleans has a history of working with the Meridian Rapid Defense Group to improve its vehicle mitigation infrastructure. In 2017, the city purchased archer barriers from the company to protect against possible vehicular threats. More recently, the company replaced older barriers with newer, more advanced models designed for greater efficiency and safety. To ensure the city’s security forces are well-prepared to handle these updated systems, Meridian’s leadership, including CEO Peter Whitford, visited New Orleans to train NOPD officers on the best practices for deploying and maintaining these barriers.
As New Orleans continues to implement these measures, the focus remains on ensuring that residents, visitors, and major events, such as the Super Bowl, are protected from potential threats, while maintaining the accessibility and vibrancy of these iconic city landmarks.
