North Carolina Man Accused of Ax Attack That Ends in Tragic Loss

A shocking incident unfolded in Hoke County, North Carolina, where a man has been charged with second-degree murder after a violent altercation that ended with his mother’s death and one bail bondsman severely injured.

The chaos began on December 16 when Hoke County police received a 911 call reporting an “assault in progress” at the home of 46-year-old Caleb Jones on Rockfish Road. The call came from one of two bail bondsmen at the scene. According to the Hoke County Sheriff’s Office, the situation turned violent when Jones allegedly attacked one of the bail bondsmen with an ax, striking him in the upper body. Tragically, during the commotion, Jones’ 73-year-old mother, Linda Hall, was also critically injured.

When police arrived, they found Hall unresponsive. She was rushed to the hospital by helicopter but, sadly, passed away the next day from her injuries. The bail bondsman who was attacked with the ax was also taken to the hospital, though his condition has not been disclosed.

Meanwhile, Jones barricaded himself inside his home, refusing to come out. Police called in the Special Emergency Response Team and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol to help resolve the standoff. After some tense hours, officers managed to detain Jones and take him to the hospital for evaluation. A warrant for his arrest was issued on December 23, and he was booked into the Hoke County Detention Center.

Investigators later revealed that the bail bondsmen were at Jones’ home because he had skipped a court appearance in October. Jones already faced multiple felony charges, including violating a domestic violence protective order, making threats, and fleeing arrest. According to Hoke County Captain Daniel Shipp, Hall had been trying to intervene and help her son when the situation spiraled out of control, leading to the tragic outcome. Jones reportedly turned on one of the bail bondsmen in a rage, using an ax as a weapon.

Jones now faces a slew of charges, including second-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and two counts of assault inflicting serious injury with intent to kill. His bond has been set at $1.78 million, and he made his first court appearance on December 27.

Hoke County, located about 100 miles east of Charlotte, is reeling from the disturbing events that left a family shattered and a community seeking answers.
