A tragic incident unfolded in Northeast Baltimore on Thursday afternoon, marking the city’s first homicide investigation of the new year.
Around 3:10 p.m., police officers were called to the 5900 block of Daywalt Avenue. When they arrived, they found a 36-year-old man who had been shot multiple times. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are asking anyone with information about this case to reach out to Baltimore police at 410-396-2100 or call the Metro Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-866-7LOCKUP.
This isn’t the first time Baltimore has faced such a heartbreaking start to the year. In 2024, the city’s first homicide happened on January 2, when 16-year-old Noah Gibson was tragically killed on the unit block of Gorman Avenue. A year earlier, in 2023, a 17-year-old named D’Asia Garrison lost her life in a shooting on New Year’s Day. She was killed just before 3:30 a.m.
Despite these somber moments, there has been a promising decline in homicides over the past couple of years. Baltimore reported 201 homicides in 2024, a significant drop of 58 compared to 2023. That year, the city recorded fewer than 300 homicides for the first time since 2014, marking a 21% decrease from the previous year.
While these numbers show progress, Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley reminds everyone of the human cost behind the statistics. “It’s a good accomplishment to come in under last year, but it’s still too many for our city,” he said. “We talk about it as numbers, but that’s somebody’s child, somebody’s father, uncle.”
The city continues to hope for a safer future, with fewer families grieving the loss of loved ones to violence.
