NYPD Officers Shoot Armed Suspect in Brooklyn, Investigation Underway

A tense confrontation in Brooklyn ended with an armed suspect being shot by NYPD officers on Friday night. The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. on East 80th Street near Flatlands Avenue in the Canarsie neighborhood.

According to police, uniformed officers in two unmarked vehicles were patrolling the area when they heard a single gunshot. They immediately spotted a 50-year-old man exiting a convenience store and running up the sidewalk. Officers got out of their vehicles and attempted to stop the man, but he ignored multiple commands.

The suspect then allegedly ran behind a tree and pointed a firearm at a police sergeant, prompting the officers to discharge their weapons. Four NYPD members fired, striking the suspect in the torso. Officers on the scene quickly administered first aid before transporting the suspect to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition, police say.

Police recovered one firearm at the scene, and a second weapon, described as a ghost gun, was found inside the convenience store. Thankfully, no officers were injured, but they were all taken to local hospitals for medical evaluation.

The incident was captured on body-worn cameras worn by officers, as well as security footage inside the store, authorities report.

The NYPD has not released the suspect’s identity, and the investigation is still ongoing.
