A Missouri man has been found guilty of shooting a youth football coach following a dispute over his son’s playing time, according to authorities. Daryl B. Clemmons, 45, was convicted of assault and armed criminal action for the 2023 incident, as announced by the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office.
The shooting took place on October 10, 2023, during a practice game for the City Rec Legends Football League in the Kingsway West neighborhood of St. Louis. Prosecutors stated that Clemmons became upset over how much playing time his son was receiving and got into a verbal argument with 34-year-old Shaquille Latimore, a volunteer coach.
During the altercation, both Clemmons and Latimore were armed, but Latimore handed his gun to a friend, suggesting that they resolve the conflict with a physical fight. At that point, Clemmons pulled out his firearm and shot Latimore five times before fleeing the scene. Authorities confirmed that Clemmons later turned himself in to police on the same day.
Several children were playing nearby when the shooting occurred, adding to the severity of the incident. At trial, Latimore testified that Clemmons continued shooting at him even after he had fallen to the ground. Meanwhile, Clemmons claimed in court that he acted in self-defense, arguing that Latimore had provoked him to fight.
Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore condemned the act of violence, particularly in a youth sports setting. He emphasized that such incidents undermine the values these programs aim to teach, including teamwork, discipline, and respect. He also noted the long-lasting trauma this event may have caused for the children and families who witnessed it.
Authorities stated that the situation could have easily turned deadly, not only for the coach but also for the bystanders. The impact of the shooting extends beyond those directly involved, as the presence of children at the scene raises concerns about safety in community sports programs. Clemmons is set to be sentenced on March 13.
