Nearly 47% of Americans approve of Trump’s administration so far, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll taken in the first 24 hours of his presidency. That’s a boost compared to much of his first term, signaling a warmer welcome this time around.
Trump’s immigration policies also struck a chord with many. About 46% of respondents support his approach to immigration, with a notable 58% agreeing that the U.S. should reduce the number of asylum seekers at the border. To deliver on these sentiments, Trump signed executive orders ending birthright citizenship and declaring a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border to build more physical barriers.
The Not-So-Good News
However, Trump’s decisions aren’t sitting well across the board. 58% of Americans believe he should not pardon individuals convicted in connection with the January 6 Capitol insurrection. Despite this, Trump signed pardons for approximately 1,500 people involved in the riots.
When it comes to the Justice Department, only 29% approve of how Trump is handling what he calls “political prosecutions.” While accusing the Biden administration of politically motivated actions, Trump has made waves with his own declarations, promising “retribution” against his perceived enemies. These remarks have sent ripples through Washington, with some fearing political vendettas are looming.
In a controversial move, Trump even issued preemptive pardons for figures like Dr. Anthony Fauci, General Mark Milley, and lawmakers from the January 6 investigation committee, citing concerns over potential “political persecution.”
