Record-Breaking Snowstorm Sweeps the South, Leaving 10 Dead

A huge snowstorm has hit the Gulf Coast, affecting areas from Texas to Florida. This storm is being called a once-in-a-lifetime event, with freezing temperatures and heavy snow causing serious problems. At least 10 people have died, mostly from car accidents and hypothermia. Texas has reported seven deaths, Alabama has had two, and Georgia has seen at least one death.

The storm has led to major disruptions. More than 2,000 flights were canceled on Tuesday, and over 1,800 flights were canceled on Wednesday. New Orleans’ airport, Louis Armstrong International, canceled all departing flights for the day. In Atlanta, DeKalb County declared a state of emergency and told people to stay indoors. Over 100 cars were stuck on the roads, preventing emergency crews from helping.

Some places in the South have seen more snow than they’ve had in over 130 years. Florida, for example, experienced its heaviest snow on record, with nearly 10 inches of snow falling in Milton, near Pensacola. Pensacola also saw a record of 8.9 inches. In Texas, Beaumont recorded 5.2 inches of snow, setting a new record for the city. Alabama had a record snowfall of 7.5 inches in Mobile, and Louisiana saw 7.6 inches in Baton Rouge and 8 inches in New Orleans. This was the heaviest snowfall New Orleans has seen since 1895.

In addition to the snow, temperatures are so cold that the snow is not melting. About 11 million people in areas from Texas to South Carolina are under cold weather alerts, with some areas experiencing record low temperatures. Officials warn that even colder temperatures are expected on Thursday morning.

The storm has caused widespread damage and left many people stranded in dangerous conditions. It is a reminder of how powerful weather can be, especially when it strikes in areas that are not used to such extreme winter weather. People are urged to stay safe, follow local advisories, and avoid travel if possible.
