Michael Anthony McCoy, a 67-year-old man from Roanoke, is facing serious federal charges after allegedly robbing two banks in a span of just three days in October 2022. McCoy made his first appearance in federal court on Thursday, where he was formally charged with conspiracy, brandishing a firearm, and two counts of bank robbery. The charges stem from his involvement in two separate bank heists that occurred within a very short period of time, both of which took place at Truist bank branches.
According to the indictment filed in U.S. District Court in Roanoke, McCoy’s first robbery occurred on October 26, 2022. McCoy is accused of directing a woman named Dawn Davis, 55, of Roanoke, to write a threatening note to be used during the robbery. The note reportedly stated, “Do as I say and no one will die.” Armed with this note, McCoy entered a Truist bank branch, handed it to the teller, and brandished a firearm, demanding money. McCoy successfully fled the scene with $6,485 in cash.
Two days later, McCoy allegedly struck again, robbing another Truist bank branch on October 28, 2022. This time, McCoy is said to have stolen nearly $6,000 from the bank. Similar to the previous robbery, McCoy is accused of using a firearm to intimidate bank employees and customers while demanding cash. Prosecutors believe McCoy’s actions during both robberies were part of a calculated plan to steal large sums of money.
Dawn Davis, who was reportedly involved in the first robbery, has already pleaded guilty to related charges in October 2023. Her involvement has added complexity to McCoy’s case, as prosecutors claim she helped facilitate the initial robbery by carrying out McCoy’s instructions. McCoy now faces the full weight of federal charges, which could result in significant legal consequences if convicted on all counts.
The case is ongoing, with McCoy awaiting further legal proceedings. The severity of the charges against him underscores the seriousness of his alleged crimes and the potential penalties he faces.
